On the Subrecursive Computability of Several Famous Constants

چکیده
For any class F of total functions in the set N of the natural numbers, we define the notion of F-computable real number. A real number α is called Fcomputable if there exist one-argument functions f , g and h in F such that for any n in N the distance between the rational number f(n) − g(n) over h(n) + 1 and the number α is not greater than the reciprocal of n + 1. Most concrete real numbers playing a role in analysis can be easily shown to be E3-computable (as usually, Em denotes the m-th Grzegorczyk class). Although (as it is proved in Section 5 of this paper) there exist E3-computable real numbers that are not E2-computable, we prove that π, e and other remarkable real numbers are E2-computable (the number π proves to be even L-computable, where L is the class of Skolem’s lower elementary functions). However, only the rational numbers would turn out to be E2-computable according to a definition of F-computability using 2 instead of n+ 1.

On subrecursive representability of irrational numbers
We consider various ways to represent irrational numbers by subrecursive functions: via Cauchy sequences, Dedekind cuts, trace functions, several variants of sum approximations and continued fractions. Let S be a class of subrecursive functions. The set of irrational numbers that can be obtained with functions from S depends on the representation. We compare the sets obtained by the different r...
متن کاملE 2 - computability of e , π and other famous constants
We show that e, π and other remarkable real numbers are limits of E-computable sequences of rational numbers having a polynomial rate of convergence (as usual, E denotes the second Grzegorczyk class). However, only the rational numbers are limits of E-computable sequences of rational numbers with an exponential rate of convergence

متن کاملRelativizing an incompressible number and an incompressible function through subrecursive extensions of Turing machines
We show in this article that uncomputability is also a relative property of subrecursive classes built on a recursive relative incompressible function, which acts as a higher-order “yardstick” of irreducible information for the respective subrecursive class. We define the concept of a Turing submachine, and a recursive relative version for the Busy Beaver function and for the halting probabilit...
متن کاملPolynomial-time hierarchy of computable reals
In mathematics, various representations of real numbers have been investigated and all these representations are proved to be mathematically equivalent. Furthermore, it is known that all effective versions of these representations lead to the same class of “computable real numbers”. However, when subrecursive (such as primitive recursive) is taken into account, these representations can lead to...
